Intervista a Susanna Tamaro
Solitamente i mass media la dipingono come una persona schiva e chiusa, ma leggendo le sue opere e la sua biografia si ha l’idea che Lei sia piuttosto una persona solare e aperta: com’è in verità Susanna Tamaro?
E’ vero, sono una persona solare e aperta, tant’è che provo sempre molto stupore davanti all’immagine che continuano a trasmettere di me i mass media, i quali confondono facilmente il non essere mondano né presenzialista con l’essere schivi e chiusi. Non ho problemi nei rapporti con gli altri, sono curiosa di ogni incontro e mi fermo spesso a parlare con le persone sull’autobus, per la strada, come sa bene chi mi ha incontrato e fermato, anche a Trieste. Naturalmente, per mia natura, ho anche bisogno di molta solitudine, perché per toccare i livelli più profondi della creatività non si può stare nel frastuono del mondo. Amo la solitudine, dunque, perché è la fonte del mio lavoro, ma appena posso esco a incontrare i miei amici, che sono tanti.
Lei è molto legata alla natura, agli animali, ai boschi ed alla campagna. Vive in una fattoria, circondata da ponies, cani e gatti: non sente la mancanza della città e di una vita un po’ più mondana?
Della mondanità non sento mai il bisogno perché è una dimensione che mi annoia profondamente e nella quale mi sento a disagio. La città invece delle volte mi manca, soprattutto in inverno, quando in campagna c’è poco da fare. E difatti, nei mesi invernali sto spesso a Trieste e anche con Roma, dove ho ancora una casa, ho un rapporto abbastanza continuativo. E poi viaggio abbastanza per lavoro per cui i periodi in cui sto solamente in campagna sono purtroppo pochi e non continuativi.
Prima di diventare scrittrice ha studiato al Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia di Roma ed ha lavorato come regista ed aiuto regista ed ha scritto, sceneggiato e diretto il film “Nel mio amore”: nei suoi progetti futuri ci sarà ancora posto per la regia?
Sicuramente. Il prossimo impegno creativo a cui penso è proprio film, tratto da un mio soggetto originale, che spero di girare nel 2008.
E’ stato proprio un regista ad essere uno dei suoi sostenitori più entusiasti: com’era il suo rapporto con Federico Fellini?
E’ stato un rapporto abbastanza particolare perché Fellini amava sedurre ed essere circondato da ammiratori devoti, mentre io ero - e sono tutt’ora - insensibile alle adulazioni. Per fare un esempio, quando dovevamo vederci, mi telefonava e mi diceva: “Fatti trovare sotto casa. Ti vengo a prendere con l’autista così, nel quartiere, tutti vedono che sei amica di Fellini” e io gli rispondevo: “Ma no, non importa, ti raggiungo io con la bicicletta.” C’era comunque una grande complicità e una grande allegria tra noi, forse anche per questo mio essere imprendibile, stravagante, immune dalle sirene della vanità. Ho un enorme debito di riconoscenza con Fellini, che è stato il primo a scoprirmi e a parlare di me sui giornali. Purtroppo è morto l’anno prima del mio grande successo.
Quali sono stati i suoi primi contatti con il mondo della letteratura?
Sono stati con Giorgio Voghera, a cui penso sempre con grande affetto e ammirazione, anche per la comune passione per le scienze naturali. Quando ero a Trieste lo vedevo sempre al Caffè San Marco. Era molto interessato all’intelligenza delle galline, di cui ha studiato il comportamento in kibbutz, ed è stato anche il primo lettore in assoluto dei miei libri.
C’è qualche persona in particolare che l’ha ispirata nella creazione dei suoi romanzi? E nei suoi racconti per ragazzi?
Contrariamente a quanto la maggior parte delle persone crede, i miei personaggi sono tutti sono frutto della mia fantasia. Naturalmente, come tutti gli scrittori, attingo alle mie esperienze, alle mie conoscenze e alle mie sensazioni, ma non scrivo libri autobiografici. Per quanto riguarda i miei libri per ragazzi, mi sono ispirata unicamente al mio desiderio di divertirmi e al mio amore per i bambini e per gli animali.
Una curiosità: è vero che è imparentata alla lontana con Italo Svevo?
Sì, perché discendo, per via materna, dalla famiglia dei Veneziani. Italo Svevo - che ho sempre sentito chiamare in famiglia con il nome di ‘zio Ettore’ - ha sposato la sorella della mia bisnonna, di cui era anche cugino. Infatti sua figlia Letizia è stata la mia madrina di battesimo, dalla quale ho preso il mio secondo nome: Letizia, appunto.
A Zurigo ha fondato la Fondazione Tamaro, con lo scopo di aiutare e sostenere donne, bambini e persone disagiate. Da dove ha inizio questo progetto e cosa è stato realizzato finora?
E’ nata nel 2000, per creare situazioni di sviluppo. Credo profondamente che l’istruzione e lo studio siano le uniche vie di crescita e di liberazione dell’uomo e dunque cerco di creare situazioni in cui le persone possano mettere a frutto i loro talenti. Sono aiuti soprattutto mirati alle donne, con borse di studio in Italia, progetti di microcrediti in Colombia, un centro di educazione sanitaria in Congo, una casa di accoglienza per bambine di strada a Mumbay in India e altri progetti in via di sviluppo. Penso che il dovere di ogni essere umano sia quello di lasciare il mondo un po’ migliore di quello che ha trovato. Questo è lo spirito con cui è nata la Fondazione Tamaro.
E’ legata a Trieste?
Sì abbastanza. Infatti negli ultimi anni ho sentito il bisogno di tornarci più spesso, anche perché i miei fratelli e i miei nipoti vivono a Trieste. Come tutti i veri triestini, mi piace passeggiare a Barcola, sul Molo Audace e fare delle lunghe gite sul Carso. Amo particolarmente la città quando c’è la bora.
Usa spesso internet?
Molto raramente, anche perché dove vivo in campagna c’è ancora una linea-lumaca. E poi comunque sono una persona molto fisica, se cerco una notizia, un’informazione, preferisco sempre avere tra le mani un supporto cartaceo.
Pensa che un sito come “Il Portale di Trieste” possa essere un buon veicolo per accrescere l’interesse dei giovani per la cultura e lo spettacolo nella nostra città?
Spero di sì. Me lo auguro di cuore, anche perché a Trieste si arriva difficilmente. Tutti i miei amici mi dicono. “Ah, Trieste! Dev’essere bellissima, ma non ci sono mai andato. E’ così difficile da raggiungere.” Il mondo sembra fermarsi a Venezia, anche perché effettivamente raggiungere in treno la nostra è un’impresa che richiede una pazienza di altri tempi, calcolando il numero di ore per compiere i pochi chilometri che ci separano da Venezia.
La ringraziamo del tempo che ci ha concesso e ci auguriamo d’averla ancora ospite del nostro sito. Noi continueremo a seguirla con molto piacere nei suoi lavori.

The lighter colored area on the edges of the welds are actually just where I cleaned up the metal with a grinder. Another good thing to note when TIG welding is that the metal needs to be spotlessly clean. As soon as you think its clean enough, clean it once more. If you don¡¯t, the welds look horrific.
